Privacy Policy

This policy explains how LocalHelper collects, uses, discloses and protects your personal information, in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.

1. Who we are

LocalHelper Technologies Pty Ltd (“LocalHelper”, “we”, “us”) operates the LocalHelper marketplace at localhelper.com.au. We are the entity responsible for the personal information handled through the Platform. This policy should be read together with our Terms of Service.

2. Information we collect

Depending on how you use the Platform, we may collect:

  • Identity and contact details — name, email address, phone number.
  • Address and booking details — service addresses, the tasks you book, dates, notes and history.
  • Government-issued ID and verification data — for Helpers (and, where needed, customers): photo ID, police-check results and right-to-work evidence, collected to verify identity and eligibility (KYC).
  • Location data — with your consent, approximate or precise location during a visit, used for matching, arrival tracking and the safety/SOS feature.
  • Messages — the content of in-app messages between customers and Helpers.
  • Payment information — when card payments go live, these are collected and processed by Stripe; we do not store full card numbers.
  • Device and usage data — app/website interactions, device and log information, used to operate and improve the Platform.

3. How we collect it

We collect information directly from you (when you sign up, book, message or complete verification), automatically as you use the Platform, and occasionally from third parties such as identity-verification and police-check providers where you have consented.

4. Why we use your information

  • To create and manage your account and provide the Platform.
  • To match bookings, coordinate visits and enable customer–Helper messaging.
  • To verify identity and eligibility, and to keep the community safe (including SOS).
  • To process payments and payouts (via Stripe) once live.
  • To send essential service communications (booking confirmations, sign-in links) and, if you opt in, product news.
  • To detect fraud, resolve disputes, meet legal obligations and improve our services.

5. When we share information

We share personal information only as needed to run the Platform:

  • Between customers and Helpers — enough detail to complete a booking (for example, first name, service address and relevant notes are shared with the assigned Helper).
  • Service providers — Google Firebase / Google Cloud (hosting, database and authentication), our transactional email provider, Stripe (payments, when live) and identity/verification providers.
  • Legal and safety — with law enforcement or others where reasonably necessary to comply with the law, respond to an emergency, or protect people’s safety and rights.

We do not sell your personal information.

6. Storage and security

Your information is stored using Google Firebase / Google Cloud infrastructure. We apply reasonable technical and organisational safeguards, including encryption in transit, access controls and verified server-side authorisation so that only parties to a booking can access its details and messages. No system is perfectly secure, but we take active steps to protect your information and to respond promptly to any incident.

7. Location and SOS data

Location is used to support safety and coordinate visits. You can control location permissions through your device settings. The in-app SOS feature is provided to assist in a difficult situation but is not a replacement for emergency services — in an emergency, always call 000.

8. Overseas disclosure

Some of our providers (such as Google and Stripe) may store or process data in data centres located outside Australia. Where this happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure your information is handled consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.

9. How long we keep it

We keep personal information for as long as needed to provide the Platform and to meet legal, tax, safety and dispute-resolution requirements. Verification records may be retained for a period after your account closes where the law requires. When information is no longer needed, we take reasonable steps to delete or de-identify it.

10. Your rights and choices

  • Access and correction — you can view and update your details, and export your data, from your account settings.
  • Deletion — you can request account deletion from your settings; we will action it subject to any legal retention obligations.
  • Marketing — you can opt out of product news at any time; essential account emails will still be sent.

11. Cookies and analytics

We use essential cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in and to understand how the Platform is used so we can improve it. You can manage cookies through your browser, though some features may not work without them.

12. Children

The Platform is intended for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us so we can remove it.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be notified through the Platform or by email. The “last updated” date above shows when it was most recently revised.

14. Contact and complaints

For any privacy question, or to make a complaint, contact our privacy team at privacy@localhelper.com.au. We will respond within a reasonable time. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
